A Weekend Near the Royal Gorge: What to Do Beyond the Bridge
Observer Ranch is a campground near the Royal Gorge in Penrose, Colorado, close enough to make the bridge a quick day trip but far enough to fall asleep under dark skies instead of a hotel parking lot. The Royal Gorge Bridge is the obvious draw, but the area around Canon City has enough to fill a full weekend.
The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park
The Royal Gorge Bridge is one of the highest suspension bridges in the country, spanning the gorge above the Arkansas River. The park around it includes the bridge walk itself along with a zip line and other attractions. Hours, tickets, and open attractions vary by season, so check the park's site when you plan your visit.
Rafting the Arkansas River
The Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge is a well-known whitewater rafting run, with outfitters in Canon City running trips through the canyon. Rapids range from mellow floats to more technical whitewater depending on the section and the season's water levels. Trip lengths and prices vary by outfitter and season.
Canon City itself
Canon City is the closest town with a walkable historic downtown, local restaurants, and shops. It is also home to the Museum of Colorado Prisons, a look at the area's history as home to the Colorado Territorial Prison. It is worth confirming hours before you go.
Skyline Drive
Skyline Drive is a narrow, historic road along a hogback ridge on the edge of Canon City, built in the early 1900s and offering views out over the valley. It is a short detour, not a full day, but worth the stop if you are already in the area. The road can close seasonally, so check conditions before you drive it.
Where to end the day
After a day at the gorge or on the river, Observer Ranch is close enough to get back before dark and far enough from town lights that the sky opens up once the sun goes down. Cabins, campers, and RV sites are all available, so however you like to travel, there is a way to stay.
